Chaplin’s Hidden Story and the Second Gypsy Jazz Concert. The Khamoro Festival Is in Full Swing.
Tuesday at Khamoro may not kick off until the evening, but it will definitely be worth the wait! The highlight of today’s program is the Czech premiere of the documentary Chaplin: Spirit of the Tramp. But film and literature lovers won’t be the only ones enjoying the day – once again, Smíchov’s Jazz Dock will come alive tonight with the sounds of gypsy jazz!
CZECH PREMIERE OF A FILM ABOUT CHAPLIN
Everyone knows him. A small man with a bowler hat, mustache, and unmistakable walk who made the whole world laugh. But few people know that Charlie Chaplin had Romani roots. That’s why the Khamoro Festival is presenting the Czech premiere of a film about one of the most iconic figures in cinema history. You can catch the documentary Chaplin:Spirit of the Tramp at Kino Atlas starting at 6:30 p.m.
The film captures a family’s journey to uncover the Romani origins of the famous actor, director, and screenwriter, whose Tramp character became one of the most recognizable symbols of global cinema. The documentary is based on testimonies from Chaplin’s family members, particularly his son Michael, and also draws from a unique family archive. Audiences will discover previously unseen material and get to know Chaplin from a new perspective.
IN THE RHYTHM OF THE CIMBALOM AND GYPSY JAZZ
Have you ever heard of Michal Taragoš? If not, now is your chance to learn more about this brilliant musician at the presentation of the book In the Rhythm of the Cimbalom, which begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Smíchov branch of the Municipal Library. Taragoš’s memories – joyful, touching, and sometimes painful – form a mosaic not only of one talented artist’s life but also of an entire generation of Czechoslovak-Hungarian Roma whose stories are often missing from schoolbooks. Michal Taragoš shares his life story with gentle humor, ease, and a pinch of nostalgia, as told to his longtime friend, Slovak director Dana Račková. These memories will come to life before your very eyes at the book presentation. Actor František Čachotský will give them voice, while cimbalom music weaves through the narrative. And who better to bring the instrument to life than Michal Taragoš himself?
That’s it for today’s accompanying program – but the day is far from over! Tonight at Jazz Dock, we’ll be treated to the phenomenal Italian guitarist Dario Napoli. This musician blends traditional gypsy swing with elements of bebop, funk, and modern jazz, creating a fresh and unexpected sound full of energy. His trio is completed by two outstanding musicians – Tonino De Sensi on double bass and Benji Winterstein on rhythm guitar, whom critics consider one of the best players in this genre worldwide. Dario and his ensemble have performed at the most prestigious festivals and venues around the globe – so of course, they couldn’t miss the world’s biggest Romani festival. Trust us – this group knows how to blow you away!
