Paľikeras! The 27th Khamoro is behind us!

During the last week of May, the Romani sun of Khamoro once again lit up Prague. And what a week it was! A week full of concerts, exhibitions, discussions, and community gatherings that showcased the strength, diversity, and vibrancy of Romani culture. And above all – it showed that we can all come together, regardless of our differences. That it’s possible.

Summing up the entire program would be a challenge – so much happened! But if we had to highlight one truly unforgettable event, it would be the phenomenal performance by the Seville-based dance group Ballet Flamenco Sergio González. We’ve never seen such a show and energy at Khamoro before. The 18-member ensemble of dancers and musicians – the youngest of whom was only nine years old – presented flamenco in its purest and most traditional form. Audiences had the chance to experience their performance three times – at the Traditional Romani Music Concert, during the Defilé in the center of Prague, and at the final Gala Concert.

But Khamoro isn’t just about music. This year’s accompanying program also showed that the world’s largest professional festival of Romani music isn’t afraid to address sensitive and difficult topics. As part of the mini-conference Speak Up / Vaker zoraleder, the very first research focused on the status of women and the issue of domestic violence within the Romani community was presented. We’re incredibly grateful that a full hall of visitors came to hear the findings and took part in an open and respectful discussion.

Thank you for being with us – at the concerts, in the streets, and in your hearts. Without you, it wouldn’t be Khamoro.

And even though the 28th edition is still far off, we can already reveal that the festival team is working hard to once again bring the very best of Romani culture right into the heart of Prague.

The event is held under the patronage of the Minister of Culture, Mgr. Martin Baxa, and the Government Commissioner for Roma Minority Affairs, Mgr. Lucie Fuková.
