Khamoro continues: Gypsy Jazz, Storytelling, and a Book Launch about Emil Ščuka
The morning after the opening party might feel rough, but the second day of Khamoro is definitely not one to sleep through. Today is all about gypsy jazz, but there’s also a packed side program. On the schedule: a discussion on Roma integration in Prague, a book launch about Roma visionary Emil Ščuka, and storytelling by the fire. In the evening, don’t miss the first gypsy jazz concert at Jazz Dock in Smíchov!
QUO VADIS, ROMA?
The day kicks off in the morning with a professional roundtable discussion. How is Prague implementing the Roma Integration Strategy? What actually works in practice, and what remains only on paper? Representatives from public administration, the non-profit sector, and Roma experts will gather at Khamoro to tackle these questions. The conference will offer a space for sharing experiences, best practices, and building new connections – because Khamoro is all about bringing people together.
And if you’d like to learn more about someone who dedicated his entire life to issues surrounding Roma identity, don’t miss the launch of Quo vadis, Roma? – a book about Roma visionary Emil Ščuka. Written by Jaroslav Balvín, the publication traces Ščuka’s life story and provides a detailed look at the key moments of the Roma national revival. The book isn’t just a window into the past – it’s an inspiration for the future. Celebrate its launch with us today at Khamoro, and pay tribute to a man who devoted his life to serving his people.
FIRST GYPSY JAZZ CONCERT WITH MILAN “ANGELO”
The evening program offers a much-needed break from the rush of the modern world. A moment to pause – to enter a space where there are no phones, no social media, and no television. A return to the time when all essential knowledge was passed down through stories. Experience the ancient Roma tradition of vakeriben – storytelling – in person. All of this by the crackling fire in the magical setting of Prague’s Kampa, accompanied by beloved Roma songs performed by the band Gipsy Brothers and singer David Kraus. You’ll hear stories about family, love, separation, and return – tales that will make you laugh and touch your heart. Just like life itself. And you don’t have to just listen – feel free to join in and tell your own story, too...
The evening will close with the long-awaited gypsy jazz – a global phenomenon known for its fiery speed, improvisation, and deep emotion. At Jazz Dock, prepare for electrifying guitar melodies, musical passion, and tremendous talent. That’s Milan “Angelo” Novák! Though only 18 years old, he has already performed alongside musical legends. He’s played with the world-renowned guitarist Fapy Lafertin and the phenomenal violinist Roby Lakatos. In addition to the Czech Republic, he has performed in Poland, Austria, and even as far as Taiwan. Milan is living proof that great music knows no borders. Come see it for yourself tonight!
